Producing food on an industrial scale involves the combined use of land, water, pesticides, fertilisers, livestock and energy.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only does it take up a lot of space and resources (an estimated 40% of the terrestrial area of the planet and 70% of globally consumed freshwater)\u00b2, but it also causes a ton of other negative environmental impacts like <strong>contaminating water with pesticides<\/strong> <strong>and excess nutrients<\/strong> and <strong>contaminating the air when applying fertilisers and pesticides<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"animal-welfare-aside-livestock-farms-are-also-a-big-emitter-of-greenhouse-gasses-through-animal-digestion-methane-and-manure-as-well-as-through-water-contamination-\u00b2\">Animal welfare aside,<strong> livestock farms are also a big emitter of greenhouse gasses<\/strong> through animal digestion (methane) and manure, as well as through water contamination.\u00b2<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"further-reading\">Further reading:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" id=\"animal-welfare-aside-livestock-farms-are-also-a-big-emitter-of-greenhouse-gasses-through-animal-digestion-methane-and-manure-as-well-as-through-water-contamination-\u00b2\">Here\u2019s a bit more information on <a href=\"https:\/\/montagneverte.org\/en\/how-to-eat-less-meat\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">how eating less meat helps the planet<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">How can we do better?
