Recycling can sometimes seem a daunting task. In order to protect our winters and planet, it really is imperative we all do our bit though, whether we’re at home or away on holiday. There’s nothing fluffy or fun about recycling so let’s just get right to it. Below you’ll find information to make recycling across the valley easy and stress-free.
Where are the closest bins to me?
You can find out where the rubbish collection points are throughout the valley by using the website Ou Poser Mes Poubelles https://www.ouposermespoubelles.com/index.aspx Simply click on the town you’re staying in (eg Morzine, Montriond) and then zoom in to the nearest bin icon to your location. When you click the icon, it will bring up a photo of your nearest collection point.
Here is the photo of the bins at the Post Office square, for example.
Which bin is for what?
The quick answer is: green for glass, yellow for packaging, black bag symbol for non-recyclables.

On the above website, there’s also a description of which collection bins are at that location. For example, in the Post Office square, the description is:
“3 CSE d’OM, 2 CSE pour les emballages ménagers et 1 CSE pour le verre”.
CSE is an acronym for conteneurs semi-enterrés, which means semi-under ground containers. If you have seen the refuse lorries around town, you’ll know exactly what that means. If not, then the image below may help. Though you’ll only see the wooden part above ground, the majority of the big cylindrical containers are underground.
So, at the post office square, there are three of these bins for ‘OM’ waste.
OM stands for ordures menagers. This means household waste ie non-recyclable items, destined for the incinerator. Waste from everyday household activities and similar household waste: nappies, tissues, filament bulbs, broken crockery, corks, etc.

There are also two for emballages ménagers, meaning household packaging. These are recyclable items including food cartons, paper, metal packaging, cardboard packaging and plastic packaging.

Finally there is one bin for le verre, meaning glass. Recyclable glass includes bottles (of any colour), flasks, jars and jars, which must be disposed of without the lids and caps.

Please make sure you use the correct bins for each item, and make the effort to go to the larger bins rather than trying to stuff your household rubbish into the small bins in the village centre!
